re: food
@nautilee do those even count as oranges or are they grapefruit at that point
re: food
grapefruits are a separate type of citrus entirely with a different flavor and color
re: food
@nautilee yeah, I know--I was being kinda facetious
grapefruit is about that size though
re: food
yeah for a second I was afraid she might have grabbed the wrong fruit I had to double check the bag
re: food
@nautilee apparently grapefruit is actually a hybrid between sweet (navel) orange and pomelo (and sweet orange is itself a hybrid of pomelo and mandarin) so they're surprisingly close to the same fruit for two fruits that are not the same fruit
re: food
@Felthry
oh wow. that is fascinating
re: food
@nautilee citrus taxonomy is *weird*
*every* citrus fruit is some kind of hybrid of three or four progenitor fruits, the mandarin, pomelo, citron, and sometimes papeda
of those, the mandarin and citron are the only ones that are really worth eating; the papeda is supposedly incredibly bitter, and the pomelo is like a grapefruit except the peel is like half the thickness of the fruit
re: food
@nautilee it seems like the larger fruits always taste blander, it's like there's a fixed amount of juice per fruit and when the fruit is bigger it's less concentrated
re: food
I'd believe that!
re: food
@nautilee i don' think that's actually the case, but it feels like it a lot of the time
it's why we go for smaller apples and stuff when we get them from the store
re: food
fair! Tbh I do know of a couple of exceptions right off the bat - fuji apples taste pretty great no matter the size so I much prefer the huge ones of those.
re: food
@Felthry
yes, if a bit bland
