Rowling announced today that she is now opening a so-called women's only rape crisis centre in Edinburgh, that is, of course, going to exclude trans women & non-binary people. Unfortunately, all the articles about this seem to have just regurgitated Rowling's press release, so I don't want to link to them here.

I was sure this was a leaf beetle (Chrysomelidae) when I photographed it in Panama.

But no. It's actually a darkling beetle (Tenebrionidae) in the genus Nilio. Beetles never cease to... they just never cease. There are far too many of them.

Flank steak!

I dried it, rubbed it with melted Wagyu A5 fat, then salted; put under the broiler for 4 minutes per side, then left to rest 10 minutes.

Served over rice, a side of caraway pickled cabbage (made by @Supership79, our resident picklemeister), topped with a sinfully bright and delicious persillade (minced parsley, garlic, lemon zest, capers, scallions, ginger, oil, salt, spices)--like a French chimichurri.

Not tender, but delicious.

A riff on the Croque Madame: had two hard-boiled eggs to use up, so they took the roof.

Bread (potato-scallion loaf) and ham both store bought, sadly.

The cheese is my truffle-gruyere "processed" cheese (still using that up). The béchamel I broiled on top had duxelles added, for another burst of mushroom.

On the side, Japanese-style home-pickled cabbage.

Dessert? Financiers!

Just learned of this giant adorable fox sculpture in Rotterdam and now I must share it with everyone.

I was supposed to be photographing American football at 10am yesterday morning but one of the teams defaulted, therefore I had 2.5 hours to kill until the 12:30 game was due to start. So it was very kind of this California quail to give me the runaround at the nearby Auckland Botanic Gardens for two hours before finally deciding to pose nicely.
