Writers are taught not to write wish-fulfillment—it's too easy, boring, or low stakes. But that reasoning is wrong. It only seems that way because we've all already read thousands of wish-fulfillment stories about cis het able-bodied white males, so they're very... predictable.

For every other demographic?

Readers actively, desperately crave wish-fulfillment stories about themselves, because they rarely if ever see them.

A female Malaysian blue-banded kingfisher (Alcedo peninsulae). At first glance, she could easily be mistaken for a common kingfisher, with her rufous underparts and conspicuous white neck-flash. In 2019 I spent a month in SE Asia, during which I spent a week in Vietnam, at Cuc Phuong National Park to be exact. We were hiking a trail up in the hills one night when one of my friends spotted this Mossy Frog (Theloderma corticale) in a small tree, one of those species you hope to see but don’t harbor any expectations. It turned out to be one of five species of anurans encountered in maybe a ten meter stretch of trail. An unforgettable experience. #frogs #amphibians #herps #herpetology

One thing I wish my more fragile fellow white people in the fediverse would at least try to understand is that Black people aren't calling out racism for fun. They call it out because it hurts them, but also because they think it might change something. It's literally an act of trust and vulnerability.

When someone asks you to be better, it's because they think you have it in you to be better. Try to live up to that.
