All of the resources that went into Half-Life: Alyx could have been better spent:

Fixing the Linux versions of Half-Life 1 and its expansions (you literally can't "finish" Opposing Force because of a bug they _reintroduced_).

Porting and putting HL: Uplink to Steam.

Porting Decay to PCs.

Reinstating any fucking kind of quality and content control to Steam.

When a person feels like they have power or authority, that can make them speak over others even when those others have better knowledge than they do. These aren't the only things that can make a person do that - excitement and enthusiasm and anger and passion can too - but power and authority are more relevant to the specific phenomenon of 'splaining.

A racist society defines some people as "white", bestows upon those people power, and trains them to feel they have authority. A patriarchal society does the same with maleness. A gender-essentialist society does the same with dyadism (the opposite of intersex) and cis-ness. A classist society does the same with wealth, economic security, managerial positions in its labor systems, and education within its educational systems. The list goes on.

One of the skills that helps us perform social justice better is learning to recognize what it is that is making us feel like we ought to speak so we can choose not to.

So a lot of people have a lot of criticisms about the spectrum view of gender identity, mostly centred around the idea that it's a false dichotomy between male and female, which makes it an oversimplified picture.

And I completely agree with that criticism. But I don't agree that a spectrum is a bad depiction of gender, because this is not how a spectrum works!
