Furry Art Friday (SFW)

Going to make this a tradition, until I forget.

Firstly is this number, which was one of the first things I ever got commissioned. Fall in Alberta is not like this - we go from mildly chilly to horrifying cold in about a week. So I can't be a fall person, since we don't really have it. But it's a nice thought.

So far, assignment #2 is doing okay, despite me having been mentally sucked into a jet engine for the past three weeks!

re: Protip for new-to-Mastodon people

nvm, I double-checked the federation rules and while it's the most common reason toots show up in the TL it's not the only. My mistake!

In case you haven't heard, the Streets of Rage 4 soundtrack is amazing. Here's the track inspiring me to post:

The Youths™

Last night at the theatre, Here Comes Your Man by the Pixies came on, and the twentysomethings behind the counter were singing along and going "hey I think I like the Pixies."

On the one hand, I had to think to myself "the Pixies are grandparent music now, why are you interested in them?" And then I went "oh, maybe they're interested because the Pixies are dope as hell" and went on with my night 🙂

Good flick! Not my favorite film of his, but I'm glad I made the effort.

Now i have to brave some real nasty weather, though.

I had to dip from class a little early but I'm kicking ass at school and this is the last night I can see DECISION TO LEAVE, so off I go.

Computer grumbles

Apparently Lenovo's new machines solder their RAM chips on, so no more taking the route of buying RAM on the cheap and installing it. Phooey.

Think I can still swap out the SSD if needed, though. But my laptop's from 2018, it's not THAT old. Maybe I'll just nab a new battery and fix the spacebar?

Anyways I've been in a much better mood since I took Twitter off my phone!

And the thing of it is, in many cases anger is fully justified. People have a right to be mad about police violence; there's something the matter with you if you're not mad at cops getting away with murder.

But when I saw people I knew get furious at someone whose chief sin was "did not like movie" at an intensity that was all out of proportion, I started to wonder: if social media is a habit, do the emotions become a habit as well?

LB: The story of Twitter for me is the story of me following smart, insightful, funny and talented people, and then watch them get gradually more and more prone to fits of terrifying anger.

The moment the algorithmic timeline set in, Twitter slowly morphed into a place you go to get in a bad mood and spread it around.

If the revealed behaviours of the Twitter-Mastodon migration are any indication, being subject to arbitrary algorithmic moneyball does profound damage the human psyche. Algorithmic transparency is a mental health issue and nobody realizes it.

Programming Stuff (+)

Despite not really being 100% familiar with CSS and being out of practice with JavaScript and HTML, I'm actually making some progress customizing the Rarebit template for Brand Echo. Nice!

Marvel Snap

I finally swapped out Professor X since he causes as many problems as he solves (just like the comics Professor X)

Article with suicide mention (not mine) (~)

So upon being reminded of its existence, I went and read the New Yorker article about the Golden Gate Bridge and how it attracts people looking to surrender to the black dog. newyorker.com/magazine/2003/10

The part that leaps out to me is the part that leapt out to a lot of people - the part where they interview people who lived. And they say the same thing, that as they fell the suicidal ideation left them, and they realized that they didn't want to die.

And that just makes suicidal ideation seem so much more evil to me, because of the people who didn't make it. How terrible their last moments must have been, realizing that there was a monster in their mind that had manipulated them into doing this, and it had abandoned them just in time for them to realize that they didn't want it and that it was too late.

Suicidal ideation is a monster.

I am apparently no longer allowed to refer to a sysadmin as "uptime girl" and then sing "She's been living in her uptime world".

FRIEND: It's called cauliflower. It's not ghost broccoli.

ME: [taking a long drag on my cigarette] Listen kid, I know what I saw.
