Dear every new migrant asking for "universal" logins like Twitter:

Who amongst you is willing to give time, money, and/or other resources towards...

👉🏾running a central server to keep track of who has reserved what name from what instance
👉🏾forking the mastodon codebase and teaching to be able to continuously update its list of reserved names from said server
👉🏾keeping this fork up to date
👉🏾keeping this server running 24/7
👉🏾convincing other mastodon admins that this is a good idea and they should switch to this fork

...in the service of making sure that your precious user name is unique across the entire fediverse?

(mastodon is open source, if you want to do this *you can*, nobody's going to stop you.)

In the real world, you can distinguish yourself from other people who have the same first name by bringing in your last name; here, your userid has a 'last name' in the form of the server it's on. It's not hard. It's just not like Twitter.

Dear every new migrant asking for "universal" logins like Twitter:

Dear every new migrant asking for "universal" logins like Twitter:

@Thaminga but but VErIFICATION and nobody can be arsed to spend a single iota of thought figuring distinguishing me from other people with my name or who may be pretending to me OHNOHS
