ridiculous thought experiments in physics

sometimes you just need to demonstrate to people unfamiliar with special relativity that you can't just break the speed of light by putting the entire energy budget of the universe into 1 (one) electron awoo.space/media/-x2gnUsVuCBYS

I woke up like three hours before I planned to and can't sleep now, what's up y'all

vaguely warm take

honestly if there's one thing I hate about most implementations of "realism" is that it's always just to reduce diversity, color nad just... the whole vibrancy to things that makes it all enjoyable to begin with

like truth is often much stranger than fiction and it's perfectly possible to get super weird while still staying well within the bounds of our universe, embrace that shit
embellish it, even

when there is one arrow under a toot, it's a singular toot

when there is a double-arrow, that toot is part of a thread

it's a small thing, but it's useful information

how people think trans folks decide on their transition paths: one step at a time, operating on things they've felt from birth

how trans folks actually decide on that sort of thing: *points at sexy werewolf/robot/eldritch abomination* transition goals

sci-fi worldbuilding guide progress

"Anomaly" here being the angle of the world to its orbit at 90° away from periastron.

The dashed line, in addition is a representation of temperature swings due to eccentricity; divide the values you get from this by 45, multiply by the average temperature of your world to get a rough idea of how big these will be before worldwide climatic effects.

Dick around with the sliders to see what happens, use it for your projects I guess~

sci-fi worldbuilding guide progress

Actually did by far most of the work on this last night save for a very quick update just now, but here's a thing that'll also be featured in the guide I'm working on~

desmos.com/calculator/bpkpr3wr

It's essentially a universal solar altitude calculator. Values are in degrees, orange curve is height at solar noon, the blue one is height at solar midnight. For the values:
L = latitude
T = axial tilt
P = orbital period
E = eccentricity
A = anomaly

didn't get -much- done today, but did significantly improve upon a part of the guide that was bothering me so hey, progress

upsides of writing long and convoluted sci-fi guide: learning tons of new shit myself along the way, picture ideas, maybe inspiring others if it gains some traction???????

downsides: I'll be peachy damn keen not writing about all this again for the next few years lmao awoo.space/media/vnjzmv_IwH_k2

music

y'know I've kinda been wondering about how to do musical notation in text and since masto actually gives you enough characters to make this work: musicians of mastodon, can y'all make any sense whatsoever of this:

C'8 -8 C'8 A8 -8 C'8 -8 C'8 -8 B8 -8 G8 -8 G'8 -16 G'8 -16 E'8~C8 -8 C'8 A8 -8 C'8 -8 C'8 -8 B8 -8 G8 -8 F'8 -16 F'8 -16 E'8~

numbers = note length
- = pause
' after note letter = octave up
~ = slide

ladies and gentlemen

this is mambo number five
