my home away from the whitelist is mastodon.social, however the follow list there and my follow list here have significantly diverged at this point.
is there a good tool out there to reconcile these lists? #meta
about how racist harassment works on leftist fedi
@AskASwiss @timnitGebru I mean obviously the targeted individuals/instances block and defederate with the most obvious troll/Nazi/4chan instances who use slurs. They're not even the problem.
What isn't solved by blocking is when a "nice, leftist" queer admin and their friends start shitposting about a Black instance, making false claims against it and playing innocent when called on it.
That admin's server is blocked, problem solved, right? But they keep up the badmouthing and lying, whipping up the atmosphere of hostility, and direct people to harass the Black instance over conflicts that don't involve that instance at all.
While the Black instance is attacked left and right, they are now ALSO attacked for blocking the original instance. Oh why did you block them? They are so nice and leftist! Do you hate queer people?
They can defederate, yes, but at that point they're so exhausted and there is so much hostility in every direction, it becomes easier to leave.
So they leave.
And the original admin and their friends who harassed them play the victim, and get lots of sympathy. They remain popular and accepted.
It's not the easily-blocked Nazis who are the problem.
It's your nice white friends.
To #BIPOC / #POC users of Mastodon (others can boost):
What do you make of CW culture and norms on here?
The people I see being most vocal about it are 99.99% White people which feels like a red flag
(edit: White people - you're welcome to read and boost, but please be mindful about replies as this is a discussion by and for BIPOC. This includes replies to other people's replies. Preferably just don't comment in this thread, I've gotten tired trying to moderate even well-meaning folk.)
i made a crossword! it is a bit tricky but i hope also fair.

years ago I wrote a tool called sloth — which is like cat but slower — and only today did I realize you can pipe things like vim through it

less nervous follow up
Disclaimer to my disclaimer, I do still believe in using CWs liberally. Giving people the option to engage or not is hugely helpful, essential even, to many people here.
