I've made a handshake deal to quit Twitter, so now I really should be more active here!

The only problem is that my chosen instance () is HIGHLY restrictive and will only confederate (is that the right word?) with other instances they've white-listed. I admire the idea, but this makes it harder for my friends to find me, and for me to follow my friends.

Does anyone have another instance they'd recommend, or a workaround they've thought of? :)

@jakebe I would suggest meow.social (which seems to be trucking along pretty well after a temporary collapse under unexpected new user load a few months ago!), or furries.club.

@jakebe You could always migrate to another instance - or if you're not already invested on the instance you're on now, just sign-up on another instance (or three) and see which you like the best. The only risk you run in doing that is that your friends may wind-up following you on multiple instances until you coalesce to one of them.

@jakebe yeah that's why I moved off that server. I loved the name, but there were certain people I just couldn't interact with. Also yay! Welcome!

I really enjoy bears.space, they're pretty cool. I'm also on wobble.xyz, but that fatfur focused, so maybe not the best place.

Maybe lgbt.tech? Not sure if they use a blacklist or whitelist though.

*waves* This instance has been working fine for me so far. It uses a blacklist.

@jakebe tech.lgbt has been a nice general geeky & queer server. Glad we'll be seeing you around more. :D

@jakebe
Yay! Make good content here! I like meow.social personally

@jakebe Incoming nuance:

There isn't a proper word because the rationale for limiting features and interactivity is complex.

The more popular an instance becomes, the more likely it is to generate and consume a lot of data. High traffic on the wire and a lot of processing power is used to serve up posts and execute queries (explicitly via searches and implicitly via Local™ and Federated™ timelines).

Traffic is monetized, and CPU consumption is monetized. That's capitalism.

@jakebe some instances will limit the types of traffic between servers. Particularly popular servers that are more likely to implicitly generate more traffic and CPU usage on the instance in question's part.

We see this with the following:

- disabling searching of post text
- not downloading or displaying (DoD) posts in the Federated™ timeline
- not DoD posts for individual users when viewing their profiles
- not DoD -every- user a person follows or is followed by when viewing their profile

@jakebe Remember that our clicking comes at a cost to the instance's owner(s). And, if possible, find out how to donate to the operation costs. (Eg- meow.social has a Patreon)

There isn't a clean solution because it's a complex and nuanced issue. One clean but shortsighted solution is to return to services where we are the product generating revenue through data collection and advertising. (And then withstand the effects/repercussions/consequences.)

@jakebe The other is to be mindful and donate money to instances running and promoting the values we trust. I don't plan on staying on meow forever, just until I can find a server with the right level of transparency regarding data consumption and features enabled. But I'm definitely donating what I can when I can and trying my best not to click around compulsively. 😅

@jakebe I adore tech.lgbt. It’s furry friendly, with great mods, and is just good vibes.
