History (CW: Suicide mention)
In 2000, a member of my first therapy group committed suicide. Her family invited the therapy group to the funeral, but buried her under her deadname. I said then it was an insult both to her and to us. The group fragmented in the wake of the argument that followed.
How far we've come. How far we have yet to go.
Friend: Can you help me with [aspect of worldbuilding]
Me: SURE. What do you have so far?
Friend: Well, I want to base it around [group of famous tales]
Me: So, okay, those date back to the medieval period at the earliest, so you want to work backwards from there, you can lean on history or make your own, and depending on X you might want to do 1 or 2, and [babbles on till the next little ice age about all the possibilities]
When I joined masto, I gravitated towards following creative peeps and noticed a thing that's pretty common to all of us: we feel guilty for promoting places that people can buy our work or otherwise support us financially. So I started the #CreativeToots hashtag for that very reason. Got an Etsy page? Online store? Patreon? Selling a piece of art? Throw that tag on it. Do it with unfettered abandon. Everyone else: Look at that tag for artists to support. Buy their stuff. Help them create. <3
No one needs to starve. No one needs to freeze. No one needs to die. There is enough for everyone. More empty homes than all the people without them, more food than grocers can even sell. The labor and the materials to end scarcity exist now. It is not a far-off dream. We can end scarcity in this life.
Work, Woo
I actually got applause at the meeting today, for the showmanship.
And it felt good.
Work, Woo
Anticipating that one day, we would be noticed, I created a work item titled only, "what is th' buni working on?" with a link to a blog post documenting what the project is, what it does, how it does it (with diagrams), and why we need it.
Today, at Shiproom, the VP of Engineering finally asked me in the middle of my status update, "forgive me, but... what are you actually working on?"
So, I got the presenter to scroll up to the very top of the board and click on that work item.
Work, Woo
It's the little moments in which you have to take the greatest joys.
At work, I've been working on a massive project automating a task that we've desperately needed to automate. I'm the only developer working on said project, so I've been doing a ton of work on my own recognizance. My team-of-two -- my coworker is doing integration work with other stuff -- finally rose to prominence in our company shipping meeting today.
Shameful Admission
The best part of watching @adeptomega play Major/Minor last night was when @ElectricKeet turned to me with a horrified look and said, "This is how you feel when I ask you to watch movies with me, isn't it?"
Yes. Yes, it is.
On My Own Bulldada
I've fallen so far up my own existence that I've generally lost--and never really had--interest in visual porn that doesn't imply narrative. Portraiture as a classification of art has joined still life and landscape for me. I see a character that's absent any frame if reference or dynamic in the picture and I start trying to interrogate the meaning, the how and why of whence it came to this point, and most visual art can't answer me, so I come away disappointed.
Critique
"You just told me you aren't interested in my primary hobby and we've known each other for two minutes. Let's exchange phone numbers, since we're both tourists in the same country."
@Valerie_Elysee: "Who knew that this would end up being more like No Exit than anything else?"
... and now we're off to Akihabara. Oh, joy.
Critique
Next up, Sergeant Pupper's Lonely Hearts Club Bland and the Lord Pompous Plair, the Guardian of the Trolley Problem.
And... nice job. Caylen just outed the whistleblower while confronting the Trump-alike. To say nothing of the potentially complicated gender politics that have just been engaged.
... but what in ANYONE'S NAME did that segment have to do with the previous story?
