My personal recommendation to people who are new to Mastodon is: talk about things that aren't Mastodon. Might sound simple, but during a big time and a big migration it's easy to get focused on the platform instead of... anything else! A timeline full of mostly talking about the platform isn't healthy for the platform itself - and it's not that fun either. Start living here! If you like to, anyway.
update: Titanfall 2's campaign is really fun and doesn't overstay it's welcome

meta mastodon - world pol - long post
So what happened yesterday is i think a good example in regards to the nature of timelines and being considerate regarding prior learnt gamification habits of signal boosting news for clout.
When the missile news began to hit there started to be a very intense feedback loop through various timelines of people panic posting about it, sharing news articles, having takes, shouting over each other, doom posting, arguments on how people were responding, etc.
These anxiety driven feedback loops have hit the queer community here quite a few times over the last handful of years as you might imagine.
It is the same as a twitter hashtag getting huge traction but the nature of the timeline means it doesnt algorithmically get limited to a tab instead swamping everyones feeds and snowballing people panicking.
Ultimately that is the reason why CWs are often seen as essential by many long term active users here on posts that are likely to ellicit this. Its about trying to limit that potential for snowballing mass panic, and endangerment.
