new job

wow... onboarding for new company has gone.. way smoother than @pple did.. and huh...
wasn't the only person in the new hire meeting using they/them pronouns... that is different.. in a good way xD
also... don't feel like any of the onboarding meetings have been a waste of time

downside.. first meeting with the new team involved getting pulled into briefing session about an incident and the fact that if the thing was not addressed.. the worst case scenario was it starts an actual fire in a data center.. sometime in the next hour to month xD

wow... well aside from the fact I'll be starting my first day light on sleep...

Apple (as a contractor): here is a 3 year old macbook pro, oops we forgot some account stuff and didn't send you the "first week" plan doc or meeting invites until friday.

New employer: Brand new macbook pro 16, if you want a 13 you can trade it out later, here is a $2k for home office stuff (desk, chair whatever) , $250 budget mouse + keyboard and a $400 dock. Also here is week schedule.. a week ahead of time!

I don't know if anyone else gets anxious about phone calls but a little tip I've learned is: if there is a phone call that I don't want to make, before I start dialing the number, I carefully hold the phone in my hand & toss it gently into a lake. I hope this advice helps others.

Sometimes... I really fucking hate being the reliable, dependable, responsible person... willing to drop whatever to help someone.. @.@;;;

Just sat down with fresh panag from my favorite local thai place and now I get drive all the way to mountainview because I'm the only person a close friend knows with fucking jumper cables.

JUST WANTED TO EAT MY FUCKING CURRY... shouldn't be so pissy about it but I'm really hungry

Sooo... I gave Apple the I'm out bitches with no notice... never done that before.. but honestly, I would have maybe felt a lil bad if they had to pay for another week because I gave notice on Monday.

Twitter :verified: discourse

Apparently the verification on Twitter is so weak that, once verified, you can edit your account and keep the :verified: mark.

So a former NFL player that still is verified on Twitter decided to exploit this to prove a point, since he also figures he'll be leaving the hellsite sooner rather than later. Basically, a glorious "Fuck you I quit" post.

"When we learned faster-than-light travel is possible if you make a sacrifice," the alien said, "we made a big one, to last millennia: our cultural diversity."
"Oh," said the human. "We make a sacrifice each journey."
"Of what?"
"Stories. I think of a story, and never tell it."

Sigh.. contracting company keeps promising a dock.. dock has not arrived.. now I'm reading complicated internal tech docs on a 16" laptop display that keeps changing brightness because [redacted] 's [redacted]connect tool locked down a ton of usability settings.

work, contracting rant

first day of work is going great! Contracting company requires use of legal name for email and manual request for preferred name email alias through IT. But client was only provided my preferred name... so when the client sent onboarding emails for slack and email and everything else.. they vanished in to the ether.. also only one member of the team I'm supposed to be part of at the client company showed up to the onboarding meeting this morning... and he had no idea what was going on and bailed after 15 minute to eat lunch. Also they have never had a contractor onboarding on their team and were just confused about it.

We are talking like.. 1% of what the cost of my contract and everything else is probably costing them.

@mawr I've heard that a lot! One of the folks that watched it with us said as much by the end, it was there second viewing!

There is something vaguely laughable about taking a 12 month role as contractor for a company w/ a six digit salary and receiving a refurbished, scratched and dinged up version of one of their flagship products as your company computer.

I finally got around to seeing Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Uh... I loved it.. it is definitely my favorite film in very long time.

Don't think I've ever been dreading a job this much.

Accepted a 12month contract for a Fruit for a senior SRE role that is k8s, terraform and go, pretty standard stuff I've been using for years.. but conceptually the idea of a 12 month contract for a Senior SRE position seems... insane. Plus they have a reputation when it comes to contract to hire positions.

Really hoping some of the other buns in the oven come to fruition before next monday because I don't want to quit like 2 weeks in.

I need more media of robot people finding joy in growing plants, or even growing plants on, in or through themselves. that shit sustains me :blob_aww:

Personal responsibility hell for a pandemic is not okay. If this is just a cold for her and doesn't spread.. in the last month we've had two scares. Syn came over for lunch for the first time in months at the beginning of September.. then was sick two days later.. turned out to be the actual Flu and somehow we dodged that.

Covid rates are really high right now in county.. I should have asked Tara not to go.. but at the same time I get it.. it has been months and shit is rough.
