probably irresponsible purchases, input requested

So we're going to have some spare money to use (probably) if our tax refund is the same as last year (it should be)

We'll put a bunch of it into savings of course but also:

Would it be more worth it to
- buy a valve index, or
- upgrade our computer from a 2200G to a 3600, get 16 GB more RAM (for a total of 32 GB), and get a nice ultrawide monitor to replace the cheap 16:9 one we have now?

re: probably irresponsible purchases, input requested

@Felthry rrh, this is tough. the PC upgrade is more pragmatic, and will help future-proof the machine, but it's likely that there will continue to be good VR games being released, not to mention any affirming applications it can have.

re: probably irresponsible purchases, input requested

@windyorigami depending on the exact amount we get, it *might* be possible to at least upgrade the PC's cpu and also get an index? Not certain of that. Would have to drop the RAM and monitor upgrades though

re: probably irresponsible purchases, input requested

@Felthry hmm. you could probably drop the display upgrade, as it has no real effect on performance. are the programs you tend to run more CPU or RAM intensive?

re: probably irresponsible purchases, input requested

@windyorigami I think they're generally more CPU limited; 16 GB of RAM is enough for most things I think? it's particularly slow as DDR4 goes but RAM speed doesn't really have that big an impact

re: probably irresponsible purchases, input requested

@Felthry *nods* honestly, whether to go all out on either or do the compromise is up to you. sorry.

re: probably irresponsible purchases, input requested

@windyorigami yeah, I know. I guess we need to figure out how much our budget is first though

@Felthry Fair warning on the Valve Index, you can't just... buy one right now. You can order one, and when it's ready to be fulfilled, they contact you to request payment, and... it's got liek a waiting time of around 8 weeks by all accounts (source I just ordered one c_c; )

By all accounts though they really are the best VR system available... and holy hell there's some amazing VR games.

re: probably irresponsible purchases, input requested

@Nine yeah, I know there's a wait to get a valve index, but it's unlikely there will ever *not* be

re: probably irresponsible purchases, input requested

@Felthry This is absolutely fair! That said, the Oculus Rift Touch is really great too, and really good, even if the screen is a little low-res, and it has problems when you face away from the cameras. (also it's a loooooot cheaper, unless you get the Rift S which is the newer model).

Granted if the only thing holding your PC back is the processor and ram (holy crap 16gig is already quite a chunk!), and you want VR, def go for the Index.

re: probably irresponsible purchases, input requested

@Nine 16GB is a pretty average amount for mid-to-high-end computers, I'd thought?

We'd kinda prefer to avoid oculus. facebook is uh. not a company we want anything to do with. Valve isn't fantastic, but they're definitely not facebook bad

re: probably irresponsible purchases, input requested

@Nine I'm kinda leaning toward getting the index and also upgrading just the cpu, since that might be feasible, especially if we can sell the old cpu or something

re: probably irresponsible purchases, input requested

@Felthry This is also very true. (got the oculus like... second hand ourselves, as a way of getting a good intro to vr, and... welp, Miq's mum likes it enough to shell out the nearly 1K to get an index for the hwole house c_c; )

@Felthry The only think I can think to say is to try the Steam VR performance test software and see how good it says your PC is. The Index would be a bummer to get if it ended up being bottlenecked by your other hardware, and that's a good way to check, I think...

re: probably irresponsible purchases, input requested

@connie we've done it before back when we were thinking of getting a vive and iwrc our computer was fine but not outstanding? but that was before the index existed
