@typhlosion So! You find an instance – I have another account on feneas.org, it seems great so far – or you go with the default matrix.org. It's federated like Mastodon, it doesn't really matter what instance you pick.
You sign up through Riot, the flagship client – either https://riot.im/app/ for matrix.org, or most instances host their own you use to sign up.
