aimless game history thoughts

@sugar multiple replies are suggesting I don’t know enough about the n64 catalogue

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow (-)

Really considering restarting this with fan hacks to improve the drop rates and disable the touch screen gimmicks. It's such a heinous example of a hardware gimmick making a game less accessible and more frustrating for no gain.

And the drop rates are just either bugged or intentionally too low.

re: aimless game history thoughts

@RyanSheebs yeah that might be true, I haven't dug too deeply into its library

aimless game history thoughts

you miss out on a lot of important history if you only look at the "Nintendo" games on the NES and SNES

but this isn't true at all for the N64 and later consoles, which seem to exist as Nintendo Consoles for Nintendo Games

watching a friend stream an RPG makes me want to stream an RPG... just this epic thing to slowly progress through together

@Moot@snouts.online that fact that I know literally 1 person playing this game makes me want to play it a million times more

Tbh there is plenty of crappy writing in western RPGs and open world games too; jrpgs are just a topic of interest.

@phenokage@snouts.online I want to BE that bowser

When I think about games with great storytelling I usually jump to short adventure games. Stuff like Tacoma or NitW or Technobabylon. I have a really hard time thinking of games in longer formats that have great writing. Like the best recent JRPG story I’ve played, Persona 5, still has obvious huge problems and doesn’t justify all its length. Am I missing good, recent examples in JRPGs or is there work to be done at improving this?

Feel free to chip in.

@ShugoWah@snouts.online If you want a jrpg with solid writing, uhh. Uhh. This is actually a huge problem

@Fenns@snouts.online @ShugoWah@snouts.online no comment on that game’s quality either way but we’re focused on switch games here

@ShugoWah@snouts.online from what I surmise it’s the best game in the tales series with a likeable protagonist. But Tales in general is a trope minefield and you’ll still have to deal with characters like “young boy trying to prove himself”, “spunky anti-social mage girl”, and “busty woman in bikini mail”

Arcade thoughts:

* Rhythm games are king, baby
* Museca taught me that arcade games have pretty complex menus these days??? Maybe it’s the language barrier
* groove coaster arcade impressed me way more than I expected it too. Didn’t get to play the Undertale songs though
* Gunslinger Stratos is a bizarre arcade resident. Team based online shooter???
* SOUND VOLTEX
* I can’t figure out which car games are good
* I played TGM2 and had a moment of zen

re: drug stuff, "I have lived a sheltered life" question

@Talija Thank you for the detailed post but I was asking specifically about the smell.
