This is a game I was unsure about several times as I was playing but Holy Shit I am glad I stuck through with it. The main story is excellent spec fic and the combat style is very inventive--a little bit Monster Hunter and a little bit third-person shooter. It's an after-the-end-of-the-world game but it's more thoughtful and optimistic than most.

I think the main things that got in the way for me were my understanding of how its open world is structured and how its economy works. Yes, you get experience and levels and move through the world like an RPG protagonist, but your strength really comes from the resources you gather and the equipment you craft. I sorta just screwed around in the world for 20 hours before moving the story along. That was... not ideal. Following is my advice on how to deal with that hurdle better than I did.

Tips for enjoyment:
* Accept that this is not a melee combat game and the spear sliding is a bit wonky.
* Don't pick fights unless you'll get more stuff (or quest progress) out of them than you put in. Learn what kinds of ammo are cheap and what are costly.
* Avoid sidequests about characters you aren't interested in.
* Think of merchants as an extension of your crafting capabilities.
* Try not to worry about ammo capacity upgrades unless you like to buy that ammo type from merchants. You can craft ammo during battle.
* Try to get the infinite-use fast travel pack as soon as you can. Then you can refill medicine, particular ammo, etc by warping to your favorite spots.
* You'll want several armor swaps depending on the situation; anti-range and anti-fire are particularly helpful.
* Take photos!
