@vector depends a lot on background and goals, but -- hoping to arrange it so ppl can benefit from as little as 2-3hrs a week on avg, but probably ~twice that to follow more of the theory or get deeper into the code. tho we'll adjust the pace to what the group can manage.
lastish call: we're starting up a study group on ergodicity (a fundamental concept in physics, dynamics, chaos, and probability, that characterizes the randomness in a system) aimed at people with a moderate math background and some coding skills.
we are an explicitly queer-affirming group and we particularly welcome ppl who feel alienated from academic math.
right now we are reading http://www.mat.ucm.es/serv/revmat/vol19-1/vol19-1a_p.pdf
our code is at https://github.com/faec/IntervalExchange
exercises are at https://github.com/faec/IntervalExchange/blob/master/Exercises/exercises1.md
🕷🕸✨
heyyy does anyone want to learn about ergodicity (~the mathematical foundation of chaos theory, if that sounds more appealing, tho also of a lot of other things)? enough to consider joining a reading / coding study group about it?
the prerequisites are probably less than u think, and u'll get to learn about one of the most important developments in 20th century math :D
Hello, everyone! If you've been following @maloki for updates on the ongoing effort to #ForkTogether, then you may be happy to know that we had our first meeting on Saturday and are still planning out governance and infrastructure before the project "officially" starts.
If you're looking to follow the progress of the fork, or you're looking to get involved, follow here for updates!
@shoofle not 100% settled but current candidates are "type theory and formal proof: an introduction" (lawvere and schanuel) and "types and programming languages" (pierce)
(level i'm aiming for is "has done some functional programming / basic formal logic but is fuzzy on exactly what "lambda calculus" actually is)
