i still don't 100% know how to find hypnotists safely (i kind of lucked out super fucking hard with my girlfriend, she's absolutely wonderful), but here are some random tips for subjects. a lot of this is going to be online-oriented, but i think the principles hold, and a lot of it also generalizes to D/s in general:

• take it slow. yes, even slower than you think.
• commands like 'when I and only I do X, if you are alone and in a safe spot, you will do Y' are much much safer than 'whenever you see/hear X, you will Y'. the hypnotist shouldn't rely on your subconscious to mentally insert the proper safeties.
• if hypnokink starts interfering with work/life/whatever and you haven't extremely explicitly negotiated that with limits while neither of you were horny with someone you trust a lot, that's a very bad sign.
• similarly, if you find even your non-kinky conversations with someone tend to veer towards kink/hypnosis in a way that you don't think you can control, that's also dangerous.
• if you don't realize the above is happening, and the tist doesn't bring it up as a warning sign, they might either be too inexperienced to handle you safely or they might be abusive.
• it's possible for people with the best of intentions to do bad things.
• avoid people who try to pull shit like "anything i say in brackets you will not consciously perceive but will do anyway". it's a nice fantasy but learning to not perceive something is hard, and if that worked it'd be super dangerous. anyone who tries to pull it is, again, either inexperienced or abusive.
• if it sounds like someone's promises for what they can do are too good to be true, they probably are. this shit is powerful, and fun, but it's not magic.
• if you think this doesn't apply to you because you're good at keeping yourself safe with a bad hypnotist, this applies to you even more. the best way to keep yourself safe is to be able to recognize a bad situation before you get too deep into it.
• avoid anyone who seems like they're collecting a 'harem' like the fucking plague. i'm thinking especially of a certain twitter hypnokink scene that i stayed the fuck away from. it's one thing to be a dom and just flirt with a lot of subs, it's another to try to get all of them into a D/s relationship.
