Feminists such as Simone de Beauvoir, Hélène Cixous, Julia Kristeva, and many others wrote about gender, not as a biologically immutable reality, but as an ideological construct. It's no coincidence that most of Judith Butler's classic book, Gender Trouble, is a discussion of French social theorists.

Feminism didn't follow a route of linear progress from the first to the second to the third "waves". TERFism was always a regressive ideology.

Fun fact: Did you know that the theorists we now know as TERFs were perceived as regressive by feminists even during the height of their popularity?

So-called "second wave feminism" was, from its inception, split between the Anglo-American school, where TERFs originated, and the French theorists, who criticised the former for their uncritical adoption of gender essentialism.
