Rewording this as a public toot: Mastodon and other federating technologies give us power as communes that work together to our mutual benefit. Centralized platforms alienate us from our communities and from our humanity. It is VERY POWERFUL for us to have these communication tools and I hope that those of you new to the service will consider staying and becoming part of a federation.

I've said this many times before but Mastodon is a unique opportunity to rewrite the rules of social engagement in social media. Please give some thought to what you are posting and participating in here and we can make Mastodon so much more than "Birdsite refuge." Let's be excellent to each other by default.

By participating in Mastodon etc I argue everyone has at least a little responsibility to keep the house clean, so to speak. The network and federation is about cooperation, not about competition. Community instead of social capital.

Given that, many of Mastodon's features are chosen the way they are to avoid encouraging certain behaviors like dogpiling and subtooting/passive aggression. Don't screenshot-quote people without consent. Engage constructively if at all.

Also, just because ActivityPub and Mastodon are Not Birdsite doesn't mean it's impossible for fascists to invade the spaces. It just means we have more collective control over their reach.

You should still practice good online safety. Get to know your instance mods. Use the report function. Don't engage with fascists for dunking points. We possess the tools to isolate them, unlike on Birdsite.

This also generally includes meta discussion about birdsite or even here. Birdsite conditioned many of us to be used to forced exposure to this kind of stuff; CWs let people selectively partake, and if you don't personally care, you can set your client to expand all CW'd posts by default. All I ask (and I assume many others) is you at least take using a CW into consideration.

New folks: CW your political posts, please. Political shitposting also qualifies. We have a culture here of voluntary participation with political content.

i suppose expecting a ton of new people to suddenly just _get_ the social norms here was a little much. that's okay, I think things will normalize over the next few weeks.
