first of all, they didn't give Gargron anything.
the expenditures are managed through OpenCollective and have to be justified by Gargron to OpenCollective. OpenCollective is a US 501(c)6 charitable organization.
the expenditures are meant to assist *other* contributors to Mastodon with getting paid in a meaningful way for their work.
i don't know why Samsung gave them money, and frankly, it does not matter: the funds are controlled by OpenCollective. maybe Samsung will build an AP or Mastodon client into their phones. who knows? but it is probably just a PR stunt really, in order to push their Samsung NEXT initiative to post-doc researchers.
anyway, this is all a snoozefest really.

The concern about "Wokeness Theater" is that people are still thinking of themselves as individuals, and not noticing the way society functions independent of individual choice. This is not a small thing. The current positioning of the fascist right as anti-authoritarian, as anti-establishment, as appealing to the great American myth of the bold rebel resisting tyranny, has everything to do with the shared belief, by both left and right, that racism and hate is an individual practice.
