It's like this. You know Rikers, right? The notorious hellhole jail? You can literally stay in Rikers forever without being charged, because of a procedural loophole in NY's speedy trial law. So they just fill Rikers up and it's a fucking disaster. It's a blight on NY. So there's this plan to close it. That's good, right? No more Rikers! But the plan is to... build a bunch of smaller jails, and spread the population out across those, so people stop complaining about it. They aren't going to close the speedy trial loophole. They aren't going to cut anyone loose.

THEY CHEERED THE SHITTY CLINTON CRIME BILL. Passively going along with right-wing authoritarianism is the *best case scenario*.

The people calling for "ICE reform" are the same ones who did nothing after the spate of BLM protests and open boot-to-the-face police violence sparked by the murder of Mike Brown. They let our overseas torture prison continue despite having eight years and public momentum to act. They didn't fix shit after LA burned. They'll let this shit keep on happening if they get whatever victory they're fantasizing about in 2020 (which they won't because they're going to lose the election but whatever.)

If you want some perspective on the centrist-liberal capacity for normalizing heinous shit: I was reading books about the Guantanamo detention program when I was in middle school. It was a terrifying new thing then, and being informed about it was considered fringe. Everything I read turned out to be true or worse and absolutely nothing about it has changed in half of my life on this planet, through the Bush and Obama administrations. It's just a Thing We Do now, and has been for a long time. This is why we need to tear things like ICE down to the foundations, and ignore anyone who talks about incrementalist "reforms."
