On a different, yet still annoying note, out of the two microSDs tested so far:

1 passed
1 failed

I'm on the third one now. I get the feeling that some shops and ebay places are not good places to get them from...

Taking undeeded risks in uncertain times is a very good way to end up in trouble with no way out.

Zombieload, more laptop checking, whew...

A few others have asked me to take a look at their laptops too. A check seems to show that it's unlikely to be vlunerable.

That said, I still reccomend patching it to be safe. Even if it is unlikely, it's better to be certain.

It's never a bad idea to take a precaution in a situation like this. It might have been exploited by any number of alphabet soup agencies.

Zombieload checking

My laptop's CPU is a Core 2 Duo P6800, Penryn core. It seems like it was released in 2008, so I doubt it's affected.

That said, I'm still going to patch it, just to be on the safe side.

Zombieload

According to the website, it's likely that any intel processor from 2011 onwards is affected.

I'll verify my laptop, but my desktop is an AMD processor.

Well, I discovered a SD card that the printed capacity didn't match what was on it. So..I threw it out.

I'm testing the SD cards I'm using in order to verify them.

When isn't the news 50 levels of horrible?

Why is every year that can be divided by 3 so bad? What happened?

Alt-Right recruitment tactics, what to look for, minor US_rel mention

I know this is a difficult topic to discuss.

I decided to look into how the Alt-Right recruits people and found this explanation.

As someone who was recruited into a Fundamentalist Evangelical Cult I recognized most of these tactics immediately as variants were used on me.

I would recommend reading this and looking for warning signs in your family, friends, etc. Talk to them before it is too late.

Alt-Right recruitment tactics, what to look for, minor US_rel mention

These are definitely cult recruitment tactics. I know because I was in a religious cult and at one point was even being trained as a recruiter.

1. Talk to an isolated person who feels left out / unwanted.

2. Invite them over, then love-bomb them.

3. Invite them to everything, become their circle of friends.

4. Start having them distance themselves from their earlier friends and family.

This is Cults 101 stuff here.

Hoping for a world where one day racism, sexism, anti-GLBT, etc. will be as socially unacceptable as spoiling the next big Avengers movie.

Computer security, scams, etc.

Please tell the less tech-savvy members of your family and friends that Microsoft does not call people. Every day at work we have people calling in saying someone at "Microsoft" called them and said they had a virus, corrupt IP, or some other thing on their computer, they let the "Microsoft" employee on their computer and now their computer is acting funny.

Here's a video showing how these groups operate.

So, the strips seem to do the job well, and seem to be holding on well!

So..out with the pins and the nails!

Oh, I didn't know that the Japanese are in a new era name now!

I didn't know that they were tied to Emperors, either. I guess I have a lot to learn about the culture there.

Well, you have to start somewhere, right?

Though, I get the feeling it's not about strength, but damaging it when removing it. Maybe. I don't know.

Right, onto something more cheerful..to a point.

See, I've been wanting to set up a Raspberry Pi server (I mean, they're cheap enough to be powerful enough to run what I want to run), but to avoid a spagetti mess on my desk, I wanted to mount them, but nailing things?

Ehh, seems a little..primitive, and even a little dangerous?

So I got those 3M strip things, and I'm going to try them. They say not to use them on wallpaper, but..I'm going to try anyway!

When you see a channel that promotes thinking starting to veer off into pseudoscience, it's a sad day.
