The best quality of MUGEN is that it's modular by design: Every individual fighter is its own completely independent module.
If it were to expand that to entire systems, HUD, etc. that would only make it even better.
Let's try applying the same logic to every game, shall we? I'll call it #indiemodular

Because each song is its own completely independant unit, and can either have its own song-specific backgrounds or depend on a system-wide backgrounds module.
I think there has been at least one, maybe three attempts at an #indiemodular "Wario Ware" style of game, yeah? In fact, people have been making them in StepMania (mentioned in previous toot) for a while now, since StepMania and Into The Groove (commercial StepMania arcade units) have implemented Lua scripting so you can make basically anything with them as long as it has a fixed time limit.
