oh. just realized a thing about Where I Come From: changing genders there is fast, easy, and complete, and they aren't sexually dimorphic; it's impossible to tell just by looking what gender a Johmarik might be, which is part of why it's considered incredibly rude to assume someone's gender or to ask. if they want you to know they'll tell you.

otoh it's considered rather rude to change your basic coloration/patterns quickly, or too often, as it can make it difficult for other people to recognize you. it's possible, and some do, but it's seen as a bit gauche.

on the gripping hand, changing your species/form is thought of akin to being a spiritual transformation, not something to be undertaken lightly. there's species-specific reasons for this that don't apply to non-Johmarik forms, but holdovers from this are part of why Johmarik are a bit squirrley about changing into other species, even for research/diplomacy purposes.
