Visited my grandmother at her assisted living facility. She didn’t recognize me this time - insisted that Mom’s child “Chris” was just a kid, I had to be someone else.

She was barely coherent, not out of a detachment from reality but because she’d lose her train of thought mid-sentence and just start free-associating with the word she’d just said.

It gets harder every time but I keep going. Every time might be the last.

One of the other residents is blind and suffers from dementia. She spent the whole time we were there calling “Mama, help me!” even when people tried to ask her what was wrong. It was heartbreaking.

@noelle I worked in a nursing home for a while, in my very early twenties. it was grueling, emotionally wrenching work. *sends much empathy*
