remember like 10 days ago i said i was going to clean my virtual and physical desktops for mental health? i didn't! and really ought to

so i finally followed through on my threats and cleaned up my desk

(and much of my living space)

it turned into a big project and now there is so much more open space, floor and surface, when i wake up i think, "did i just move in? or am i packed moving out?"

it feels great to have so much clean space! i let my environment go for so long and it feels much better now. you don't have to go overboard like i sorta did but i highly recommend working some tidying into your mental self-care

@iitalics @anotak

one question i keep having: what is all that free desk space FOR? i guess the answer is, temporary work space for when i need it.

now that the hard clean-up is complete it will be easier not to progressively re-junk it up going forward.

i do have several objects waiting to return to the desk but i'm hesitant to add any clutter at all. guess i'm feeling pretty hardline. i favor finding clever spaces to tuck things where they're available when they're needed but out of sight otherwise

where i really went HAM was rewiring my desk/workstation. i wanted to eliminate as many visible wires as possible. my tools were double-sided tape, sticky wire-holding clips, and velcro cable ties (life-changing btw)

it doesn't look particularly aesthetic from underneath (such hopes quickly faded) but how often do people get under there?

from normal living angles the wires are mostly hidden and i really like the clean baseboard look (no wires on floor)

now i just dread moving, or rearranging furniture 😑

there is still more to do, notably my os desktop and bits of secondary living space (i have a large pile of papers that need sorted/filed/scanned/trashed)

it's mostly good for me. but as i've devoted time and effort to this i also got the feeling that i'm spending a lot of time on organizing instead of maybe working on things i'd prefer to avoid, like a healthcare insurance appeal (kill me, ahhh) and freelance job stuff.

that said, it's nice that "wasting time" has had such tangible and appealing results

@gatewave and also, what do you use for those widgets?

@sc winamp 5.8 just came out the other day! first in 5 years.

the calendar is rainlendar. very old but can still connect to google calendar.

@gatewave a) why not rainmeter?

b) i made a tweet about winamp 5.8 and it got like 50 retoots

@sc i tried and bounced off rainmeter like a decade ago, didn't immediately gratify. i'm sure it does a lot of cool stuff. the current website looks pretty slick! in any case, i bought rainlendar a while ago and it still does it one minor job

*secret winamp fistbump*

@gatewave i actually use musicbee/xmplay/spotify now, sadly. i still ADORE winamp skins though

@sc i see. maybe i'm boring but i rarely find skins near as good as the defaults winamp ships with. i have slightly modified them to remove extra tabs but otherwise i'm happy.

i also don't stream music aside from using google play's upload-your-library feature, so winamp is all i mostly need. i'm big on having one's own local library cuz streaming is so ephemeral and i'm into obscure shit. that file in the screenshot is from a 1993 konami arcade driving games arrangement soundtrack :blobcat:

@sc oh yeah, also, afaik winamp has by far the most comprehensive library of chiptune-emulating plugins. i know foobar supports some now but if i'm not mistaken it's only a subset of the chip formats winamp can play?

@gatewave is there an improved module plugin? if so then i might switch to winamp from xmplay

@sc i'm not too into mods but this is the plugin of unknown quality i currently have installed

@kara @sc show me how to love it

i only use it for audio file conversion, for which it's quite good
