While the Kickstarter union is inspiring, the companies that really desperately need to unionize often have thousands of software developers let alone other employees like support folks and managers. Those companies structure themselves in such a way that makes it exceedingly difficult to organize.
The proliferation of code camp entry-level job placements has made this even worse, because anyone attempting to organize can easily be replaced by someone who is starry-eyed about taking your role.
The organizational structure of these massive tech companies discourages cross-pollination and prevents people from talking about internal issues freely. Your responsibility is to your pod and your director's product interests, not the rest of the company's well-being.
