I'll explain this quickly because I've been asked about it a couple of times today:
Mastodon has no ads. Its only source of funding is donations.
You could donate to the open source project itself – a fine thing to do. But at the moment, with the huge influx of new users, the funding is better off going to the instance you are using.
Each instance usually publishes a donate/patreon/crowdfunder/etc link. If you go to
[your instance url]/about
you should find information about it.
I made a tool to export information about your birdsite following, followers, and lists that includes their bio, website, and pinned tweet. Given the current situation, you might want to give it a try!
Hi folks! Quick tip on what those 'post level' terms actually mean because it's extremely unclear even with descriptions
🌎Public: Shows in Local and Federated timeline for any instance that's relayed with yours or knows about you. Any.
🔓 Unlisted: the least clear. This is still bootable/sharable to others but you only show up on the feeds of people who follow you OR who follow people that boosted you OR direct link.
🔒Followers only: only they can see at all, no boosting
Unlisted is good.
Twitter migration meta
It's a different set of people with volunteer mods and a different culture. Expecting it to have the same social rules is *weird*
(also we really need to relabel the CW button for how we actually use it)
Twitter migration meta
Twitter people coming to Masto and complaining about stuff like being expected to CW and various other weird culture stuff is getting a bit weird
Twitter has LOADS of unofficial rules. Hell the entire RT function only exists because the company copied it after users made their own!
Subtoots screenshoting ratio who you can RT or quote tweet without it becoming A Thing, Get Out Of My Mentions..
I was going to make this a reply but lost the toot.
Wal-Mart was selling a Hellraiser box as kid's toy https://boingboing.net/2022/11/07/walmart-sells-the-hellraiser-puzzle-cube-as-a-childrens-stem-toy.html
which actually seems like a pretty great story hook. A company selling artifacts of great power without ever even knowing because they don't vet the third party companies they let sell shit
on genie design
@Phorm Oh, incidentally that horrible, horrible acid Soreth mentioned the other day, helium hydride?
So if Teff is the teflon based, slick and non-reactive genie and that made her, a genie based on HeH would be...
..it would be her bubbly annoying helpful-but-destroys-you-accidentally cousin, wouldn't it? She wouldn't even TRY to twist the wish but something would go spectacularly weird anyway.
And over in the corner Teff is just facepalming so hard.
Irresponsible things to do with a time machine, series ???? out of ???:
Travel back to the first person to invent installers that don't contain the entire program and wave a spray bottle at them while yelling NO BAD PROGRAMMER
I want an installer, not a bootstrapper. Because want real backups not something that goes *poof* when you update or the server goes down.
After re-watching this Tom Scott video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tdiKTSdE9Y I kinda want to see a SF story where the protaganists are uplifted hamsters, because that's who your starship crews have to be.
Eldritch abominations musing
Occured to me last night that from the perspective of a sea creature *fire* might as well be an eldritch abomination.
Can't occur naturally
Curls and whips limbs in bizarre unpredictable patterns causing dancing shadows
Harms if you get too close even if you don't touch it
Being around it in the wrong space can kill
for some it brings annihilation, scaring for others, some untouched
Can be banished, but if the banishing isn't thorough sometimes comes back anyway
re: ridiclous RPG character concepts
Necromancer who doesn't check how their target was burried so they're followed around by a pile of rolling dust.
That doephin (Phoenix-D) you might know. Sometimes NFSW but always tagged when so. More of that over at doephinad@dragon.style
