re: furry fandom, control of the narrative 

@starless@snouts.online As a furry now in her 40s who has been around the fandom since her teenage years, I can assure you that there *was* a prevalence of queerness from around 1996 and onward.

The issue is that the queerness demographic took a very limited form, very predominantly white gay men (and white gay trans women who were a very long way away from understanding that about themselves) who had the financial and gender privileges of being able to be online and to travel easily for cons. And where you have disproportionate whiteness and disproportionate financial privilege... you get an abundance of bootlickers and "respectability" queers.
