Some stats say there are over 300,000 games currently available to download on the App Store. That's more than all home game consoles put together. Curiously this isn't the peak; that was around 500,000 in Q3 2016. It's a different sea.
I would try to learn more about mobile games but it's tough--the quality standard is low, old games vanish alarmingly fast (Puzzle Fighter existed for less than a single year) and multiple literal slot machine apps stayed in the top 50 grossing for over 4 years.
You've probably heard me moralizing about gacha games and loot boxes before. I think a lot of the most successful mobile games skip back and forth over the boundary of what's ethical (like lots of tech companies!) by collecting massive player data and manipulating psychological tricks to get about 1 in 50 people to spend a truckload of cash on their clans or whatever. I don't think that's great!
