@ShugoWah That happens basically if 1) the developers themselves prefer working in Linux, or 2) multiplatform support is considered “good hygiene” for the game/engine’s code, e.g. if other non-windows versions are planned. There is generally no short term commercial gain from selling games for Linux. 2/2

@ShugoWah in seriousness, I’m a game player, developer, and Linux fan and am pessimistic about the compatibility layer approach of wine/proton for typical end users. Compiling to native code is still the best way to make something that performs well and isn’t a pain for the user to set up. 1/2

@ShugoWah Why play Warframe when you could play SUPER TUX RACER

This was specifically egged on by this screenshot of the Daggerfall manual from bird site, describing some suggestions for when you’re allowed to save/load.

I love the idea of video games with rules that aren’t coded into the game but presented in text from a manual! :D Also voluntary challenges, etc!

Best free browser/downloadable games you can normally finish in 30 minutes or less? Gag games (e.g. Bubsy 3D) welcome.

Man, you know what's a bummer

There's an old 2 minute web game called Room of 1000 snakes that I wanted to play again. I can't play it in my browser because the unity web player got killed off, and I can't watch it on youtube because copyright bots have claimed it.

@ShugoWah Linux is fast and powerful and somewhat less creepy than Windows, but beware that it does fuck around with you as much as you fuck around with it

*playing Mario Kart* but how can I enjoy this if I'm not making "interesting choices"

I only snapped out of it after playing a couple games that seemed perfect for me "on paper" that disappointed in ways I couldn't put a finger on

Now it's more like... I want to see what games try to do and judge them on their own terms

Mmm, I hate the guy who likes video games but is impossible to please

classic Doom "Compendium" megamod

Pretty cool:

A mod that collects 50+ notable "mega WADs" (over 1000 levels!) from the first 10 years of Doom's history into a single file. As an approach to curation, this is like a nicely put together box set of the first ~40 years of cinema.

watching Wonder Woman (2017)

This movie is the most extra, ultra-positive thing in the world and I love it

I dunno, the whole “work as a team but your avatar’s power depends a ton on your individual performance and whether the other team picks on you” dynamic seems to just create unhealthy social situations, especially in games like LoL or DotA with lots of downtime.

It’s both a stretch and irrelevant to say the design reflects the company’s culture towards sexist jokes and consent, yet in a short sighted way I feel a little vindication.

I associate League of Legends with a time in my life that I had low self esteem, unhealthy friendships, undiagnosed anxiety disorder, and an addiction to the submissiveness built into the peniless support role.

*and I applied for an internship there* which I might not have survived
