race in America

Huh. The new South Park game's difficulty slider is tied to your skin color. White-skin is easy and black-skin is very difficult.

Which hey, great smack in the face for a bunch of people who need it.

It's also going to affect how NPC's react to you. That's the part that has me worried.

race in America

@PaulFerence I am extremely doubtful of how useful this will be, given both South Park's track record and its audience

race in America

@Maiasma Agreed, I'm really hoping it won't be played for easy laughs.

race in America, transphobia

@PaulFerence hmm, also your character can be trans, and if you choose that you immediately get attacked in the street. So, uh, fuck that

race in America, transphobia

@Maiasma ... wut. Is that in the video? I haven't watched it since I was at work.

race in America, transphobia

@PaulFerence I don't feel the game itself is being egregiously transphobic as much as it's just trying to convey how life can be, but even the conversation with the counselor had me squirming uncomfortably in my seat

race in America, transphobia

@PaulFerence it really felt like a scene written by cis people for cis people

to be fair, I think this is the first major game where the protagonist can be canonically trans, which *is* pretty neat. I just wish that someone else had done it first

race in America, transphobia

@Maiasma I will say there are things I liked about the Mister Mackey scene, which is that while you don't hear them, your parents 100% have your back.

But if you're feeling like the butt of the joke, I don't anticipate it'll be any less clumsy about race.

race in America, transphobia

@Maiasma That fight outside the school is all of the squirming though. Yeeeeeeesh.

race in America, transphobia

@PaulFerence it's not that the Mackey scene is playing us for laughs. It feels very accurate to be frozen in mute terror while an authority figure tries to reconcile who they thought you were with who you are. And I did appreciate that your parents are on your side. I just suspect this will be an ultimately shallow trans representation written for a cis audience, and similarly a shallow PoC representation for a white audience. I'd genuinely love to be wrong though
