Part of me thinks Maxine is somewhat disconnected from her (For the sake of simplicity I'll use the feminine) sexuality and somewhat from her gender identity because she doesn't have anyone in meatspace to interact with and gain context from.

And she's in a tricky spot because she's probably Demisexual, and only feels comfortable being sexual for Emotional reasons.

That alone can cause a schism.
