@gravecat What if the server admin that gets bored and shuts it down... is you! Run your own vanity instance. *I* of all people was able to spin one up and connect to the fediverse, so someone who knows more of what they're doing could probably do better.

@gravecat Cool, when you learn, I can then lean on you for asking dumb questions I don't want to bother other people with.

@gravecat Cool, main question seems to be, is it possible for me to run an instance from home, and how inadvisable is that?

... I'm pretty sure the answer is "not enough hassle just to avoid paying $3.40 a month" which I'm told is what the hosting of awoo.space costs

@gravecat Someone whose name I'm blanking on runs a vanity instance on a raspberry pi from home, but that's probably just because it is such a bad idea.

@gravecat Yeah I think I talked myself out of doing anything from home. I did set up mine using a guide that used DigitalOcean's $10 tier, and awoo uses Scaleway's €3 tier. The guide mentioned other things they skipped, such as using Amazon for file storage. Up-to-10mb attachments to toots (attootchments?) might use up 20gb faster than I'd think.

@gravecat by 20gb I was referring to Linode's hard drive capacity

@gravecat the idea being to run a Transformers-themed instance, like there are some other themed instances around. tenforward.social has less than 200 users, and I would think Star Trek would be more universally appealing. No idea how to gauge popularity.

@gravecat I'm off work for two while weeks starting next Sunday, so I'll totally for sure try it then.
