There's a HUGE difference between a gift economy providing a pittance of support for the people doing the real work of running an instance, and actually monetizing something for ad revenue. I'm massively pro-FOSS and anti-copyright, but that doesn't negate mutual aid and solidarity -- it reinforces the need for it.
