I'm worried what this will mean for my writing. I need to get back on that horse. But right now, it's like... the drawbacks of an audience feel like they outweigh the benefits.

Not using Masto as much as I want because I'm in a weird place where I just don't want to really share how I feel about things to a general public.

It's decentralized social media, but: it's still social media, and what I value now is some measure of silence. Of holding a thought and just not letting folks know about it.

I have shown the Wally Wood 22 Panels That Always Work to two people who both initially thought it was an actual story, so that speaks to how well the panels work at making talky scenes flow well.

My hair is ALMOST long enough to reliably tie back into a ponytail but there's a couple stray locks that are SO ANNOYING ugh.

It turns out that the secret ingredient to enjoying gaming online was simple party games from the You Don't Know Jack people and a few friends who also write in the semi-pro space!

Everyone is talking about chess so I went back and reread Scott McCloud's infinite canvas comic about chess. http://scottmccloud.com/1-webcomics/chess/chess.html

I hate having to strap it around my wrist and sleep with it on, but I have to admit that wearing a wrist brace at night has helped my RSI a great deal.

It really is so well put together, and one way in which it's put together well just occurred to me.

In so many games, we have to make story allowances for returning to earlier saves, or extra lives, or so on. We have to accept that failure is part of the game, but not part of the narrative; that the five times I died to that ambush didn't really happen in the narrative, even though the emotions I experienced during that streak of mounting frustration are ones I remember.

But in Hades, from the moment you start to the moment you stop is one unbroken continuity that builds on itself. Character will comment on who you died to and how. Everything you go through feels like it happened. All the times you die count in the narrative. So do all the times you don't.

Really is a watershed moment in gaming, I feel.

To kick off the New Year, friends are showing me the Star Wars Holiday Special for the first time, and I am seriously reconsidering who I allow into my life
