venting about video games and graphical fidelity, twitter crosspost
There's a tweet going around of a hyper-realistic close-up of Horizon 2 protagonist's well-rendered teeth, comparing PS4 and PS5 graphics, with a difference in the roundness of said teeth.
Why the hell do we need games to go this hard on realism and detail if we're all playing on 20-25-inch monitors with the camera pointed at the protag's back anyway? How often are we going to be centimetres from her lips?
Why is so much money going towards tongue bump-mapping. To fucking teeth textures.
I played the new Kirby game demo recently, Neo TWEWY yesterday, and I await the release of Soul Hackers 2 and Live-A-Live. Can we please have more games with an actual art direction instead of trying to make things realistic, my aversion to looking at faces can't deal.
It's almost like Japan isn't afraid to go all out with style and direction visually, and the only time the western side of things does anything different is indie games and Tim Schafer.
This isn't to say there won't be some design language to Horizon 2 or whatever. Deus Ex Mankind Divided had a metallic colour palette to everything despite being generally a realism-fest. You can have a visual personality and realism.
But it really does remain quite tiresome.
griping about social media
I hate how I feel like I'm pleading for attention on stuff nowadays. A picture I spent weeks on has got little response, meanwhile a random comment I made in reply to someone with 100x more followers has got like 5x the reaction.
god twitter fucking sucks for art can we please use normal websites again
matrix 4 thoughts, minor spoilers
I watched Matrix 4 last night and it was incredible how on the nose it got at times, it was hilarious. The rest was good too, of course.
That said, wasn't there that one theory/essay video about the third movie that, re: Neo using his powers in the real world, suggested the next movie would include recursive matrices? Because they kind of did that in the end, only inward instead of outward.
The more I sketch random ideas for this current hyperfixation, the more I realise I'll need to give everything refined art, colours, and in-game assets too.
I think this is why video games are developed by teams.
I really might have to actually consider hiring a sprite artist.
I don't think I really properly posted about it - here is a collection of sketches I've done recently for a possible Persona fan-game.

I'm an artist and something of a game dev living in New Zealand.
I talk about personal things that can get tangentially NSFW. While I wouldn't call this an after-dark account, it's kind of a mishmash personal account and prefer to mingle with people I know or trust.
