So now I’m on mastodon.social as pessimism@mastodon.social and awoo.space as pessimism@awoo.space. But to browse both, I have to be logged into either (or both)? I’ve seen people from other instances show up in mastodon.social’s timeline, so it seems there’s more to it.

So you register on other (local) instances, but you can see all toots across—and interact cross-instance—via the federated timeline?

@pessimism It's a little complicated, but basically, when you make a post on a Mastodon or Gnu Social instance, it'll get sent out to other instances, or "federated", and users on one instance can communicate with users on other instances without the need to register on those instances (though exceptions apply, like then an domain is blocked by an admin).

@pessimism Awoo, however, is configured a bit differently. It only federates to and receives posts from Mastodon.social.

Awoo Space

Awoo.space is a Mastodon instance where members can rely on a team of moderators to help resolve conflict, and limits federation with other instances using a specific access list to minimize abuse.
