My general opinion is I am not a virologist or expert (though I dabble due to interest I doubt I could be considered a hobbyist)
My very general view is that masks CAN work depending on type, time, place. However, my general view is also poor protection against getting ill (for one thing our eyes are lovely vectors for viral infection).
Rather it is a tool to avoid others getting ill. As in by wearing one I might be able to stop infecting other people.

So for wearing a mask is an act to avoid other people getting ill with things I might be carrying. Even if it only decreases infecting others by 5% or 10% that seems worthwhile as wearing a mask is not an imposition for me in daily life.
To be faie I tend to treat vaccination the same way: a way to decrease others getting ill and becoming less of a vector.
I will admit as a furry a chance to wear silly animal faces is also fun.

That all said I do think how we culturally and governmental policy discuss the topic of disease prevention (masks, vaccination, the important step of washing your hands) has been largely a feast of ashes and regret
