here's a good page describing woodpecker's tongue structure as well as how they can hammer into trees without breaking their own skulls - also the source of the illustrated diagram: https://www.birdwatchingdaily.com/blog/2013/12/10/woodpeckers-hammer-without-headaches/

this is a post about woodpecker tongues! cw for animal skeletons + skeletal anatomy
did you know woodpeckers have bones in their tongues? and that said tongue bones wrap all the way around the back of their skulls only to anchor near the nares? their tongues are SUPER long and they can store the excess length in the tubes of bone/cartilage! it's just one of their pro strats for getting bugs out of trees.

another interesting thing is that their rib bones have no bone marrow! weird! that's another factor in why they're so dense, and ALSO part of why their bones are weak.

look at those rib bones! they're SO thick. surprisingly, though, their bones aren't very strong - high mineral density is probably why. anyway, the lack of fat is why they can't stand temperatures under ~68 degrees and tend to migrate either south or to hot springs during winter.

the narrator in the song "jolene," by dolly parton, really just wants to bang jolene. like she absolutely wants to bone down but is sublimating it so hard as she tries to cling to the relationship with "[her] man" but she has never been that into him. he's who she settled for. she is on the verge of questioning her sexuality but can't quite get there bc of heteronormativity. anyway that's my thesis give me a phd. awooo
