My understanding is that there are 3 layers of content. The folks you follow. Your own instance. And the "public" feed. The public feed is slightly moderated by your own instance. In order to be able to block a toxic community. But you can still go to that instance yourself to follow people

I use feedly to find news from sources I trust. It has helped me quite a lot stay on top of topics I'm interested in. Opinion can still crop up but it doesn't feel in my way

I have been having trouble willing myself away from screens recently to the point where I'm not eating or sleeping properly.
