If you're testing a script, consider using the Unlisted status setting for your test toots; that way, they won't go out into the public timeline, but your followers can still see it.

You can also use the Direct status setting. If you send a Direct toot with no other users mentioned, it's private only to your account, so no one else can see it.

Once your script is ready for prime time, you can set it back to Public so the world can see the fruits of your labor!
