I had a bath and thought bout mastodon and after I go cut up some broccoli I'm gonna come back and drop some thoughts on this here social networking service

okay SOOOOO my concern right now is how much I can tie my real life events into posts here. It's not that I worry about the crowd here figuring out who I am, it's that I don't want people googling on my interests and putting 2 + 2 together. I want to have posts that deal clearly with what I'm doing, but I do specific things! If mastodon was unindexed by Google I'd be so much happier (and I am thinking all-powerful search really destroys the fun of exploration & browsing anyways).

like twitter got so much worse due to three changes, I think: built-in search, removing seeing all tweets from people you follow (even the ones that are directed at other people), and adding retweets. the more lubricated the experience got, the easier it was to have all the garbage flow around. friction also helps to establish trust (great talk on that here: vimeo.com/209792795). So I want to be able to hide under a rock and not worry a stray google result will tell my mom I'm into vore.

and when I say I have particular interests, I'm not talking about kinks. Just saying what other social media sites I use (the sites, not the account names!) would pretty much give it away. anyways the internet is hard and we're all in a terrible panopticon of terror.

but this isn't something that's due to mastodon in particular, it's just life. I think I might have a less-furry account for continual posting and anyone who wants to know what it is can ask me for it. Or maybe that's overthinking it.

@eddie Good point, but it's not a Mastodon-exclusive problem. I realize you're also saying it's definitely a problem, but not one Mastodon tries to solve. The privacy thing in particular is brought up as something possibly worse than Twitter, due to the open nature of the system.

@Mycroft oh yeah, it's totally not a mastodon-only problem! I'm trying to straddle two worlds here and that's just a difficulty. I certainly won't be as kinky here as I am on AD twitter, I'm not going to trust mastodon with a pic of my butt.

@eddie Keeping worlds separate is a game I've been playing for decades. Generally, I don't think my legal name is publicly associated with this identity anywhere. Privately a few places I'm sure, when I mixed things I needed my legal name for with my (then only) email address. I've been blessed with not having over-sharing friends who blow my cover by tagging me on photos. So far.
