Capitalism, workers and automation
This idea that wealth is produced by workers (https://mastodon.social/users/Gargron/updates/2463218), is outdated, erases people with disabilities who can't work, and is proven false/unhelpful/incomplete by the rise of automation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Pq-S557XQU
What will the 'workers' say when they are no longer needed because their jobs are now done by machines?
Don't base your entitlement to material wealth on the fact that you work.
Capitalism, workers and automation
@fallerOfFalls because it can't be made profitable, and i think that automation is partly valuable because it makes it possible for more of this work to be done. and it's mostly work that can't be automated like counseling, quality childcare, emotional labor, ecological recovery projects... i'd like to see much more of that being done, although ideally on much shorter work weeks, to prevent burnout and preserve worker quality of life.
Capitalism, workers and automation
@acetone_kitten yes of course!
I couldn't figure out how to fit all of this nuance into one toot, while still getting my point across.
Capitalism, workers and automation
@fallerOfFalls a huge amount of wealth is still being generated by workers - i keep waiting for and not seeing automated fast food joints and 7-11s - but i also agree that there are fewer and fewer jobs being created, and even fewer real, actually necessary jobs, and that we should be talking loudly about the value and merit of every human life, regardless of "productivity". There's also a huge amount of fairly hard work that goes undone
