i gave this show a watch a few days ago, and to be fair, it was like three unconnected episodes, since i was interesting in seeing how it evolves and if it turns into something interesting (no)

and like, it is such a perfect example of something i see in things? it's macaroni art. it's not at all acceptable in a vacuum but gets sheer sympathetic goodwill for being hapless.

rwby REALLY feels like a "boy we really pooled together resources on this product and did our best to make the facsimile of a show. did you know we did machinima??"

yes. yes i can tell.

It's like, okay i get cheering on creators and cheering on as they do new things and you can see the cracks at the edges.

But stuff like rwby feels like it has a dishonesty to its audience

by dishonesty, i mean that it carries a sense of "hey, we're trying our best and that alone means we deserve to be put on the fridge"

and why I consider that dishonest is because there's a pretense that this is good on its own merits and not "oh look, johnny figured out windows movie maker :-)"

art through adversity, right? limitations shouldn't mean awful "hey, you tried" energy.

anyway this is REALLY harsh of rwby but I hope this phenomenon I'm describing at least sounds familiar.

I take note of it because i feel confident most of you here would make something better than rwby if you set out to do so, because you would do more than just desperately tread water, and play to what you're capable of.

and I feel being overly forgiving to an experience like rwby because of what it kinda sorta promises or represents, like, okay now what

@heatherhorns RWBY is to mid-to-late 2010s indie animation what the major webcomics of the early 2000s were to early 2000s webcomics. They show potential and a lot of people get into it because it’s all that’s available, but hopefully something better will come along and get more attention by merits of being good rather than just being there.
