@djsundog yeah, and maybe greater access and practice in making music will make people realize just how hard it is and stop devaluing it so much. Go back to actually paying for music, ideally paying the artists directly instead of going through Spotify or whatever.
@djsundog not that the music industry has ever been kind to people who have tried to make a living as a musician
@djsundog I have very mixed feelings about this. On one hand, I'd love people to be more creative and have access to creation tools and so on (and I think it's amazing that music creation software is so plentiful and easy to learn now)
On the other hand, I'd like to see earning-a-living-wage become unnecessary before entire creative industries collapse under the weight of devaluation
i've been on and off moving some things around in our house during my jazz listening today (so the currently upbeat good ass Patrice Rushen tracks are helpful) and my brain, when directing my body to do repetitive low attention tasks like "move stuff from a to b", wanders.
today it wandered to family music.
so, while I'm taking a break from wearing a path in some floors, I'm going to ramble, thread-style.
@zorinlynx last june it made me just constantly on edge http://beesbuzz.biz/comics/journal/7140-Seattle-2020
I mean one of the things I want to do is start building my own custom cabinets and when I do that I can make something better-suited than what I have now
@porsupah yes, constantly
ugh my living room is still such a disaster Sokoban game. I have no idea where to put my gigantic collection of vidya games, and I'm having trouble finding better furniture for organizing it than what I have. Makes me wonder if I really need to have all these games at the ready anyway, maybe they should go into the basement like my CDs and DVDs all did. What good does it do to have my entire game collection on display?
I mean I guess it's fun to peruse it especially when folks come over, idk
@porsupah yeah, although in this case my bot was actually running into the bot detection, somehow, despite only making one lightweight request per hour. Hopefully switching to the official API fixes it for good.
okay, switching to the YouTube data API wasn't that bad and it turns out they give you like 100 requests per day for free. The developer docs fucking suck though, especially when it comes to using an API key instead of oauth.
oh wait looking further into my logs it looks like YouTUbe has actually actively detected "unusual activity" from my bot... which, y'know, makes one request per hour. Oy.
Oh, huh, turns out YouTube's been having lots of outages where it responds 429 to everyone. https://piunikaweb.com/2021/04/26/youtube-down-and-not-working-for-many-server-throwing-error-429/ Guess there's not a lot I can do about that except continue with the current failure mode of just not providing a video if none comes up.
So it turns out that the overnight gaps in @lofibeats's YouTube thing is YouTube going into HTTP 429 mode. Presumably the problem is other machines from my VPS provider hammering the APIs, because I can't see my one-request-per-hour causing any rate-limiting problems!
Maybe I should look into using the proper search API, just to be a better neighbor. Google charges money for that though. :(
Reddit, Seattle, anti-homeless
/r/seattle was pretty bad, and then there was a schism, and /r/seattleWA was supposed to be the better place but it's like... way worse? Like, every other post is some sort of rabid anti-homeless rant
I don't even remember what the community schism was about but both subreddits are pretty awful now
@forte yeah that's what I'm saying
ugh, and while investigating this the redirect somehow got completely messed up and now I can't turn it on again for another 20 days, wtf
@forte @fluffy@queer.party I mean the real question is, why the heck does Mastodon purposefully disable the notifications view of forwarded accounts? It didn't use to!
why the hell does mastodon not let me actually look at notifications coming to my old account when it's redirecting here? like I can just imagine that someone's tried mentioning @fluffy@queer.party without remembering I moved instances and it's just going into a black hole
Seattle-based music/code/comics critter. Vaguely friend-shaped. Fibro-spoony, queer, ADHD, and anxious as heck. Handle with care.
