there are some barred owls making a hell of a racket outside tonight. XD they sound like a cross between angry small dogs and howler monkeys...
@Altivo on this page https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Barred_Owl/sounds if you go down and listen to the "duet" calls... yeah, like that. XD
@green Whoa! No, never heard anything quite like that. I've heard the famous "Who cooks for you?" a few times, but barred owls are scarce around here compared to great horned and screech owls.
when owls attack
@Altivo barred are the most common around here; we've got great horned and... several others, but every autumn some percentage of Seattle people get mauled by barred owls preemptively defending their turf while nesting/courting. I've been buzzed by one, though it didn't actually hit me, fortunately--the description I've read is "like being hit in the back of the head by a bag full of scissors." I don't want to try it! XD
when owls attack
@green I'd prefer to skip that too. The owls here are generally more shy, heard but not seen. I do like listening to the screech owls wailing when they get into it.
@green Sound like guinea fowl to me rather than owls
😜
