i'm sure nostalgia is a factor, but the look of doom 1 episode 1 is one of my favorites in gaming. the (strange choice of) sky box alone oozes atmosphere imo
doom's color palette is much more vibrant than most FPSes would become, too.
anyway i've been using chocolate doom this past year and i now much prefer it to the high-res / bells and whistles of gzdoom
