anyone else play classicube? it's basically just minecraft classic but with the ability to have custom blocks, custom textures, and more!
@sc (Before this, the only Minecraft mods that existed were the "World of Minecraft" client hacks that enabled noclipping and flying)
@sc I actually... specifically made the server from scratch ENTIRELY so that it would auto-kick "cheaters" who were flying all over the map griefing everything without even giving me the chance to manually let them outta the spawn box. 😅
@catgirl that's amazing! o:
@sc
I like to think that I kicked off Minecraft modding in general, and therefore played a huge important role in how much of an incredible success it eventually became.
But ultimately all I got out of it was enough money to buy about three Minecraft premium accounts at their reduced alpha price, one for myself and two for people who aren't even my friends anymore. ... While Notch later gave people jobs (establishing Mojang) and then sold them off for billions of dollars, leaving me in the past.
@sc only ClassiCube knows me now, and I'm a footnote in the Minecraft Wiki article on Golden Apples.
@catgirl huh. go figure.
@sc I published the first-ever fully open-source Minecraft server clone, a small Perl script that became known as "JTE server", although I always internally referred to it as "Echidna server".
It did things like allow water and lava blocks to be placed without client hacks, add variants of water and lava blocks which didn't use Minecraft Classic's fluid expansion mechanics at all, and "paint" a new type of block over existing blocks by simply breaking them.
Later someone else made a better server in Python, then things really kicked off.
